“For to us, a child is born. To us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6
- To us–to an undeserving people, to a sinful and broken world, and to a mob of rebels that would scorn him, despise him and ultimately kill him.
- A child is born–born into poverty and scandal, humbled and lowly, stepping down from his throne of perfection into a lifetime of suffering and hardship.
- A son is given–the only unique son begotten of the living God; his most precious and most valued treasure, parted with and freely given.
- The government shall be upon his shoulder–He will carry the weight and the burden of all men, bearing their injustice and violence, ruling and reigning with divine power which surpasses all human systems.
- Shall be called–by every creature in heaven, on the earth, and under the sea.
- Wonderful Counselor–the best adviser, wisest teacher, and most gracious instructor we will ever know.
- Mighty God–the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, powerful beyond measure and Holy beyond understanding.
- Everlasting Father–the Alpha and Omega, beginning and end, the very one who spoke the world into being and will fiercely love and protect his chosen for all eternity.
- Prince of Peace–the true source of the only peace there is and the ultimate longing of every human heart–not peace around or between, but peace within that which surpasses all understanding.

The part that amazes me the most is this: “his most precious and most valued treasure, parted with and freely given.” As I look at my own infant son, this baffles me. I’m so thankful for all God has done for me.
